Your teen's doctor will determine the starting dose and when to make adjustments
It's important to work with the doctor to find the dose that is right for your teen. The recommended starting dose for Vyvanse is 30 mg once-daily. In order to help the medication meet your teen's needs, the doctor will begin medication at a starting dose, and if needed, periodically increase or decrease the dose to effectively control his or her ADHD symptoms and manage side effects. This is called titration. Dosing titration may happen in the beginning of your teen's medication therapy, or sometimes later, as his or her needs change. With 6 dosing strengths of Vyvanse, your teen's doctor has the flexibility to make changes to improve symptom control and/or manage side effects.
Tips to get started on Vyvanse
- Take Vyvanse exactly as the doctor prescribes
- The doctor may change your teen's dose until it is right for them
- Take Vyvanse 1 time each day in the morning
- Vyvanse can be taken with or without food
- Vyvanse capsules may be swallowed whole
- If your teen has trouble swallowing capsules, he or she may open the Vyvanse capsule and pour the powder into a glass of water
- Use all of the powder from the capsule to get all of the medicine
- Using a spoon, break apart any powder that is stuck together. Stir the powder and water until they are completely mixed together
- Drink the entire glass of water right away after mixing. Do not store. It is normal to see a filmy coating on the inside of the glass after drinking all the medicine
- The doctor may sometimes stop Vyvanse treatment for a while to check your teen's ADHD symptoms
- The doctor may do regular checks of your teen's blood, heart, and blood pressure while taking Vyvanse
- Children should have their height and weight checked often while taking Vyvanse. Vyvanse treatment may be stopped if a problem is found during these check-ups
- Store your medicine in a safe place and count your pills regularly to make sure no one else is using them
- Do not give Vyvanse to other people, even if they have ADHD. It may harm them and it is against the law. Do not throw away unused Vyvanse in your household trash
- If your teen takes too much Vyvanse, call your doctor or poison control center right away, or get your teen to the nearest hospital emergency room
